AROUND THE TRAPS WITH TOM BOSWELL AND JIM TUCKER

QUEENSLAND storms have been known to disrupt play during the Australian PGA Championship but Peter Senior says the tournament has boasted the best weather out of any tournament in the country this year.

“The weather has been great. This is the best couple of days we have had for a tournament in some time,” Senior said. “The tournaments we have had this year, the weather has been atrocious. It’s nice to have a couple of good days on the course.”

Senior didn’t have as much praise for the condition of the course.

“It’s probably not in as good condition as it normally is,” Senior said.

“The fairways are really good but the greens are not as quick. They have a lot of grain on them so they are difficult to read. That is why the scoring is pretty bunched because nobody has really gone ahead and holed a lot of putts.”

ANDREW “Beef” Johnston had the gallery roaring on the 16th when he chipped in for birdie on the million-dollar par 3. The Englishman, who is building a cult following, had the marquee chanting “beef, beef, beef” after the quality shot and he lapped up every second of the applause. “It was probably the best shot I’ve hit the two days off the tee there,” Johnston said.

JACK Wilson showed Bulletin readers an array of trick shots leading into the Australian PGA Championship but the Queenslander had to pull off something even more remarkable during his second round.

Wilson (right) purposefully skimmed his ball over the top of one of the water traps to get on to the green before saving par.

It was a brilliant shot from the 28year-old who will have the weekend off.

A HOST of players involved in the Australian PGA will head up the highway for the $50,000 Bartons/BMD Wynnum Pro-am on Monday.

The richest one-day pro-am in Australia will be celebrating its 40th year, with John Senden headlining a stellar field that includes Rod Pampling, Ian Baker-Finch and Peter Senior.
