Pedestrian killer jailed
A PEDESTRIAN killed by a drunk-driving tourist at Airlie Beach last year was not found by police or passers-by until hours after they attended the scene, a court was told.
Omer Itshaky, 24, yesterday was sentenced in the Brisbane District Court to five years’ in jail after pleading guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of a pedestrian while intoxicated.
The former Israeli soldier and medic will be released from custody after serving 18 months. The remainder of the sentence will be suspended for five years.
Itshaky killed Kevin Bankier, 46, as he walked home after spending the night with friends at a yacht club on November 5, 2017.
Mr Bankier’s mother Luci Bankier said the court case had brought her no closure.
“Since he died I’ve just felt like a shell of a person and now I feel worse than the day he died,” she said.
Itshaky was also sentenced to concurrent jail terms for failing to provide a breath test and possessing drugs and utensils. The court was told Itshaky returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.120, more than twice the legal limit.
It was told he had been seen swerving on Shute Harbour Rd before he veered into a turning lane and hit Mr Bankier.
