BURLEIGH Heads surfer Rico Haybittle will be looking to continue a strong year of competition on the Sunshine Coast today.

The best young surfers will converge on Currimundi for the seventh event in the 2018-2019 Surfer Grom Comps Series.

Haybittle heads in as one of the favourites after recently being crowned the under-12 boys Queensland champion.

Other notable Gold Coast surfers taking to the waves include Lucas Deffenti, Quincy Symonds, Jordy Halford and Scott Arderne.

The event runs today and tomorrow and will cater for the micro-groms under-8 mixed division through the under-14s boys and girls.

Surfing Queensland CEO Adam Yates said the series was important for giving junior surfers competition experience.

“For the majority of the under eight -year-olds, this is their first time experiencing a competitive surfing environment,” he said.

“The inclusion of parent assistance definitely helps the youngest surfers ease into the format, and will help give them a boost into their surfing careers.”

The series has helped launched the career of many of Australia’s surfers with almost 800 children set to take part in the 2018-19 event series.

The next event will be held on the Gold Coast from January 9-10.
