MAKING WAVES FOR ALL THE RIGHT REASONS

Weekend could swelter despite heavy rainfall

-

HEAVY rain and thunderstorms are expected for the Gold Coast this weekend.

Weatherzone meteorologist Graeme Brittain said there was high chance of extremely wet weather.

“On Saturday we could see rainfall anywhere from 15mm to 50mm,” he said.

“There is probably more a chance on Sunday for heavy rain on the Gold Coast and we could see 25mm to 60mm.”

There is a high chance of thunderstorms over the weekend, more so in the early morning and late afternoon, that could be severe.

Mr Brittain said the weekend would be very humid with temperatures to feel “several degrees warmer.”

“Temperatures will have a high of 27 degrees on Saturday and about 28 degrees on Sunday,” Mr Brittain said.

“But it will feel more like low 30 degrees.”

If storm passes through there is a chance temperatures could drop several degrees.

ANGRY locals are calling for council to stop pouring money into what could be the Gold Coast’s most hated art installation.

Frustrated residents took to social media yesterday to label the $2.1M Yatala “Gold Coast” M1 light installation a “stuff up” after the Gold Coast Bulletin revealed council was still no closer to deciding its future, nine months after a review was launched.

“Another stuff-up!” Lorraine Barker wrote, “such a waste of money & the removal (relocation) will cost a fortune also!”

Kim Thomson said the artwork was an “embarrassment” and should be removed im- mediately.

The sign drew criticism when it was unveiled ahead of the Commonwealth Games amid complaints the words were unreadable at the angle they were installed.

Council is considering moving it to a new location but yesterday locals were sceptical of spending more money on the failed structure.

“Why should ratepayers waste more money?” Mick Laverty wrote.

Patrick Corballis said the lights should be switched off to save money.

“Turn the bloody eyesore off so we are not wasting more money powering it,” he said.

However some believed the installation should find a new home on the Gold Coast, including a position near the Bilinga Airport for passengers to see. Allan Sirett said another spot on the M1 could also be suitable.

“Beside the Pimpama Jacobs Well exit road just south of the present location would be a good location and could be erected facing oncoming traffic,” he said.

A report into the options for the installation is due back to council in February.
