You obviously got a top offer from the Titans to set up your future but having come through the Raiders system since you were young, it couldn’t have been an easy decision to leave?

No, not at all. I was always going to try to be a one-club player and stay at Canberra but I think my football was a little bit stale down there. It wasn’t so much the contract itself, I was happy to stay at Canberra for less money, it was just that I needed to start playing some better footy and I needed a fresh start.

I had been in Canberra since I was 16. The hardest part was leaving all the players and my good mates off the field. I have got a lot of good friends down there that I will be friends for life. I had a lot of good relationships, and I still do, with Stick (Ricky Stuart) and all of the coaches. They’re good people but it came to that stage in life where I needed a change. When Garth (Brennan) came and saw me and had a bit of a chat, I liked the way he was trying to take things up here and how it was building. I thought it would be a good chance to move on.
