Nurthen finds a way to conquer the competition

- EMMA GREENWOOD

KARLEE Nurthen was sick of hearing her time would come.

After a breakout NutriGrain series in 2017 in which she finished third overall, the Currumbin ironwoman only managed 11th last summer. But heeding the advice of mentor Michael King, she went to work again in winter and is getting the rewards after an outstanding world championship campaign.

Nurthen won in Adelaide to emerge with world titles in the ironwoman and board. The 22year-old will carry that confidence into today’s Nutri-Grain round at Wollongong in NSW.

“Last year was a really tough, hard year, nothing really went right,” Nurthen said.

“I trained so hard and was a bit all over the shop.

“I came in this season with a fresh mindset and put all that behind me and just trained as hard as I could.”

Today’s Ocean6 round is crucial for athletes like Nurthen whose 2017-18 results have not automatically qualified them for ironman and ironwoman finals.

The next six athletes in the standings after today’s Round 3 finals will earn an automatic finals berth.
