GOLD Coasters still recovering from a fierce storm last night are in for more wet weather during the weekend.

Last night’s storm felled trees and took down powerlines leaving thousands of residents without power.

Forecasters say there’s a 90 per cent chance the Coast will receive more severe storms today with up to 30mm of rain.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Harry Clark said the weather was likely to be worse today before clearing late tomorrow.

Today’s temperatures are expected to reach a high of around 27 degrees with only a 30 per cent chance of rain.

Last night, more than 20,000 homes were without power for hours as Energex crews scrambled to reconnect 178 downed powerlines.

An Energex spokesman said some homes were not expected to have their power restored until this morning.

The storm delivered winds gusts of between 90 and 125km/h. Hundreds of locals shared pictures and videos of damage on social media.

In Springbrook, trees and debris littered the newly restored Gold Coast-Springbrook Road after a more-than-yearlong closure due to extropical cyclone Debbie.

Large gum trees fell on top of homes and cars at Mudgeeraba and knocked down powerlines. A resident posted a video showing a powerline sparking after being knocked down.

In Robina, a brick fence collapsed in the wind near Markeri St.

Before the storm temperatures on the Gold Coast were less than pleasant.

Nerang, Robina and Coomera were among areas to reach 37 degrees.
