Bree ready to master beach event

-

KURRAWA competitor Bree Masters says a home beach advantage will quell the sense of pressure she feels as she attempts to defend her state sprints title.

Masters is the reigning Queensland open women’s beach sprints champion and will have the chance to seal a second-straight title today in the third and final round of the SLSQ 2018-19 Queensland Beach Series.

“The women’s section is very competitive, we have so many strong girls racing,” Masters said.

“It’s always tough to back up your title but I try to go in clear headed and relaxed. I’ll try and do my best and that’s all you can do.”

The race for the crown has been blown wide open following the withdrawal of open women’s leader and Currumbin representative Elizabeth Forsyth due to illness.

It has left Masters, who finished third in the flags and first in the relay last year, and fellow Kurrawa teammates Taylor Stickler and Nicole Kay all vying for top spot.

Masters is also leading the beach flag section of the Ocean 6 series as she edges towards a third straight win.

The beach series will kick off a busy period for surf life saving’s top athletes, with the Queensland Board Riding Championships (January 11-13) at Palm Beach to coincide with Round 4 of the Ocean 6 NutriGrain ironman series (January 11-12) at Currumbin.

Kurrawa will host the Young Guns carnival on January 12 while round five of the Ocean 6 series will be on February 1-2 at Surfers Paradise.

Mermaid Beach will host the Queensland Surf Rescue Championships in February, before the state’s best athletes across all surf sport disciplines descend on the Coast in March for the Queensland Youth, held at Burleigh Heads 50 years on from the inaugural event, and Seniors Championships.
