FISHERMEN GAME FOR COMPETITION

- BRIANNA MORRIS-GRANT

HUNDREDS of fishermen are preparing to take to the water this weekend as one of the Gold Coast’s biggest game fishing competitions begins.

The 2019 Light Tackle Masters will see upwards of 30 boats heading off from Southport Yacht Club in the hunt for black marlin.

The competition is a “catch and release” tournament, meaning rather than size, prizes are based on how many black marlin are caught, tagged and released over two days.

Gold Coast Game Fish Club vice-president Mark Lilley said it was the thrill of the catch that had become a drawcard for most to the competition.

“They’re quite exciting to catch, they jump around and play around a lot and there’s quite a few of them out there at the moment,” he said.

The prizes range from fishing vouchers to an invitation to the Offshore World Championships in Costa Rica.
