ONLY WAY IS UP FOR GOLD COAST EXTREME SPORTS

- BRIANNA MORRIS-GRANT AND AMANDA ROBBEMOND

THE Gold Coast is in for a wild weekend with two extreme sports championships in action.

Today, 18 Gold Coasters from a number of clubs take to the waves at Duranbah Beach in an attempt to nab a spot in the World Surf League Championship Tour’s Red Bull Airborne competition.

Surfers must complete an aerial movement coming off a wave and land soundly for their trick to be classed as completed and graded.

Former surfing champion Josh Kerr said the event was in its second year, but it was the first time it would be held on the Gold Coast.

“It’s not about finding the best waves, it’s about finding the best section and landing soundly,” he said.

At the same time more than 100 professional and amateur wakeboarders are arriving at the Gold Coast Wake Park for BoardStock 2019.

Competitors include the world’s top 10 wakeboarders, among them South Africanborn, two-time world champion Angelika Schriber.

“It’s important to have these contests because a lot of people love these riders and to meet them in person, people get really excited for it,” she said.

“It’s rad because I’m part of the international scene so being here now trying to build the community … means people can really get to know the riders on a personal level.”

The 2019 Quiksilver and Boost Mobile Pro will run from April 3-13.

BoardStock 2019 will run today from 2pm and all day tomorrow.
