Baby joy as Seahawks get off to a flying start

- ELIZA REILLY

WHEN the North Gold Coast Seahawks took to their court for their first QBL match of the season last Friday night, there was one question on everyone’s lips.

Where is Adam Tyrus? The first-year coach and former player was a noticeable absentee from Runaway Bay Indoor Stadium as his side ran out 11-point victors against the Cairns Marlins but Tyrus had a more than acceptable excuse.

“My wife actually gave birth to my first daughter the morning of the game,” he said.

“You spend the whole season preparing for the first game but then I didn’t even get there. My assistant Josh Black took the reins and did a really good job.”

Despite a third-quarter rally by the away side, the Seahawks were able to hold on for victory against one of the two 2018 QBL grand finalists.

“We have the mindset and belief that we can beat every team in the competition,” Tyrus said. “I was following nervously when they made a run at us but we recruited well and have a number of older and experienced heads in the team this year so we held on.”

Despite an impressive first showing, Tyrus believes his team still has room to grow with a number of key players still to return to the secondyear QBL side.

“Cam Goldfinch, our leading scorer from last year will be back from college in America soon and we’re still waiting on a visa for Earl Jone (US import),” he said. “That’s massive for us that we’re winning without them in the team.”

The Seahawks face the Sunshine Coast Phoenix tomorrow at 3pm.
