CAUSE HITS CLOSE TO HOME FOR PRICE

-

GOLD Coast motorsport icon Toby Price will take part in a race of a different kind this weekend.

Price, a two-time Dakar Rally winner, will be on foot tomorrow to compete in the Wings for Life World Run that raises money for treating spinal cord injuries. It’s a cause that means a lot to him, given his own injury history.

“I was faced with a spinal injury earlier in my career when I broke my neck overseas and I was very lucky to not have any permanent damage,” the 31-year-old said.

“I think it’s really important to support charities like Wings for Life that give 100 per cent of any profits to research in hopes of finding a cure and treatments for spinal injury.

“It’s really close to my heart because I could have been in the situation myself and needed the support of WFL.”

The unique run has no finish line: It is held simultaneously across the world with athletes of all abilities tasked with covering as much distance as possible before they are caught by a catcher car.

Price has previously acted as a catcher car driver but this time around will be a runner.

Having defied a broken wrist to win the Dakar in January, Price has been on the comeback trail ever since.

He recently hopped back on the bike for some training, reporting his wrist was at about 50 per cent, and will return to competitive racing this month with aboard a Mitsubishi Triton in the SuperUtes Series in Winton, Victoria. He’ll then drive in the truck category at the Finke Desert Race across June 7-10.

“There’s nothing confirmed on two wheels just yet, but hopefully sooner rather than later,” he added.
