Lawyers looking to win compo
SHINE Lawyers is seeking former clients of banned Gold Coast accountant Jenan Thorne, saying they may be entitled to compensation from financial giant AMP Limited.
Ms Thorne, who has also used the names Cenan Thorne and Cenan Dikmen, gave an enforceable undertaking to leave the industry for three years after ASIC found she acted in her own interests instead of those of her clients.
ASIC said self-managed superannuation advice provided by Ms Thorne when she was a representative of SMSF Advice Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of AMP, had not taken her clients’ circumstances into account.
The regulator also found she had recommended that her accountancy practice, Saber Accountants Pty Ltd, prepare the annual accounts and tax returns for the SMSF clients.
This led ASIC to determine that Ms Thorne recommended the services of a related party to create extra revenue for herself.
AMP has since ceased appointing authorised representatives under its financial services licences.
Shine Lawyers head of litigation and recovery Jan Saddler said many investors did not know what their rights were when they encountered a negative situation with a large company.
“People might contact SMSF Advice and have been made an offer but not be fully informed what their rights are,” she said.
“There are so many compensation schemes going around at the moment, especially after the financial services royal commission.
“Some people may not know whether or not they have been properly compensated.”
Any former clients of Ms Thorne with questions about their rights, can contact Shine on 1300 367 757.
