POLL PROVES NOISY MINORITY DON’T SPEAK FOR MAJORITY

- TONY COCHRANE

OF late you might have noticed a couple of “green activists” have been penning letters to this paper outlining the virtue of their failed ideas and concepts to instil upon the human race and in particular us Gold Coasters.

I noticed this take up to arms via the Letters to the Editor briefly aligned with the election period, as one letter scribbler in particular was standing in one of our federal seats, of course for the Greens.

They focused on their usual diatribe but what got right up me and I know a lot of you was how they always claimed in their correspondence that they spoke for a “majority” of people on the Gold Coast who wanted action on this or that issue.

Here is a fact – no they didn’t!

How do I know they didn’t speak for the majority? Well, in last week’s election everyone eligible got to vote and the people – the “mob’’ – decided yet again, as they have been doing for about 30 years, that they did not want Greens policies and their total lack of care for jobs and people’s daily lives.

At best the Greens procured 9-10 per cent of the primary vote in any Gold Coast seat. So, at best they might be representing or speaking on behalf of 10 per cent of the population.

Now I know the activists are not that together so let me help. That means 90 per cent of the “mob’’ did not want their rubbish.

So they do not speak on behalf of the “majority” of the Gold Coast. At best they speak on behalf of a small splinter group.

I know they may be vocal. I know there were low standards with some of the candidates they came up with in various parts of the country, as exposed in the media.

I know they claim to represent Australia and Australians, despite the fact that on more than 30 Bills in the Federal Parliament on national security and issues of keeping Australians safe from terrorists, they voted against those measures whether they were delivered by the Conservatives or the Labor side.

I know they care deeply about issues on climate, gay rights and other such important matters but completely ignore other countries that do not lift a finger for climate action and persecute gay people.

In their world it’s all feigned hysteria and semantics, while they sip on their lattes and push their rubbish down our collective throats, acting like their opinion is singularly important above all else but don’t take up the fight elsewhere.

So please save us the “majority’’ speak. If they act more like they really do care for the population as a whole and people’s lives, people’s work and needs other than the splinter group they are, Australians might start to listen. I doubt it, but give it a go.

Let me congratulate the victors on the weekend, particularly those who represent our stunning Gold Coast, and congratulate the Australian voting public.

It is an amazing country when you can have a strong democratic process and people get to have their say in a peaceful and respected manner. Contrast this with the outpouring of hatred and violence we are now witnessing in Indonesia because some of their citizens did not like the result of their election.

You just have to love this homeland of ours. We can all have strong opinions, but we can express them, for the main, in a decent fashion.

That’s democracy at work, with ordinary Australians safely having their moment at the ballot box.

Probably the key lesson from last weekend is never take the “mob’’ for granted.

Politicians of every persuasion need to learn to listen and respect the needs and aspirations of everyday Australians who have such a deep love for this country, its rich tapestry, its fairness and its lifestyle.

Maybe I’m wrong, but I think it is that simple.
