‘Bullied’ cop charge

Officer allegedly swore

A GOLD Coast cop has been charged with public nuisance for allegedly swearing in a car park following a heated discussion with the city’s top cop.

Senior Constable James Treanor is accused of yelling in the Broadbeach Bowls Club car park following a police mental health breakfast in late March.

It will be alleged SenConst Treanor approached Assistant Commissioner Brian Wilkins following speeches and asked if the mental health help applied to everyone within police.

Following a short discussion, Sen-Const Treanor went into the car park and allegedly yelled about “blowing his brains out” and swore loudly.

He claims he reacted after the top cop called him a “smart arse”. It is alleged two other officers had to calm him down.

Sen-Const Treanor was stripped of his badge, gun and uniform after being stood down due to the incident.

He has since been working in the property office at the Southport Police Station under strict supervision.

Sen-Const Treanor will appear in court at a later date.

The officer has lodged a Queensland Industrial Relations Commission action against four Gold Coast senior police officers claiming he has been bullied.

On Wednesday, the QIRC was told that Assistant Commissioner Wilkins and Chief Superintendent Craig Hanlon made a written request for Sen-Const Treanor to be stood down following the incident at the mental health breakfast.

Sen-Const Treanor unsuccessfully attempted to have Assistant Commissioner Wilkins and Chief Supt Hanlon added to the proceedings over comments made in the standdown request.

Documents filed to the QIRC show that request referenced complaints Sen-Const Treanor made to the Crime and Corruption Commission in 2015 about “lack of leadership, inequitable work practices and unethical behaviour” within Gold Coast police.

“For them to have used these matters to have me stood down is preFitzgerald conduct,” SenConst Treanor told the Commission on Wednesday. “These people, they operate as a gang, they feed off each other.”

The request to add the two senior police officers was denied, as they were not related to his ongoing bullying allegations made against four other senior officers.

QIRC Commissioner John Thompson told SenConst Treanor he could file a separate bullying claim in the QIRC against the top police if he wished.

Forming part of the QIRC proceedings, SenConst Treanor has accused senior police of setting quotas to sting Gold Coast motorists, sweeping a domestic violence claim under the carpet because it involved one of their own, and systemic bullying.
