WORLD Horror end for hero

Inquest told of Aussie nurse who tried to save terror victims

-

THE shocking details of South Australian nurse Kirsty Boden’s final moments have been revealed during an inquest into the London Bridge terror attack.

Ms Boden, 28, was murdered while rushing heroically to the aide of French waiter Alexandre Pigeard, 26, during the horror of June 3, 2017.

They were both fatally stabbed by jihadists Khuram Butt, 27, Rachid Redouane, 30, and Youssef Zaghba, 22, who – after mowing down pedestrians on London Bridge in a hire van – went on a bloody rampage with kitchen knives tied to their wrists.

By the time the men were shot dead, they had killed eight people, including Brisbane au pair Sara Zelenak, 21, and injured a further 48.

Ms Boden, from Loxton in South Australia’s Riverland area, had been working as a senior nurse at Guy’s Hospital in the city at the time of her death.

Forensic pathologist Dr Simon Poole gave evidence early yesterday in London’s Central Criminal Court that a stab wound to the left side of Ms Boden’s chest, inflicted with “moderate force”, was the fatal blow that killed her.

“The mode of death was hypovolaemic shock due to blood loss,” Dr Poole said.

Among her injuries was a stab wound to her head, which was inflicted with so much force, fragments of the blade broke off in her skull.

Dr Poole said it was likely Ms Boden died quickly with little suffering.

Ms Boden was posthumously recognised for her selfless actions with the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery and a bravery medal as part of the Australian Bravery Decorations.

Most recently she received the Florence Nightingale medal – the highest international honour in nursing.

Ms Boden’s last words to her friends on the night were “I’m a nurse, I have to help”.

The inquest continues.
