Plumb ripe for 500th

- TOM BOSWELL

JOCKEY Ryan Plumb believes reaching 500 Australian career wins could be on the cards at today’s Gold Coast race meeting.

Plumb enters today’s meeting at Aquis Park with 496 wins to his name on home soil and with six rides locked in and some genuine chances the Gold Coast jockey could be set to reach the milestone.

The respected hoop said it was a nice feat but it came down to getting the job done for trainers and owners.

“Winning the big races are more important,” Plumb said. “It just means you’re doing your job.

“It’s fantastic that it has come up.

“It would be good to get 500 at my home track at the Gold Coast.”

Plumb won last season’s Gold Coast jockeys premiership and is in the hunt for the title again, with 28 wins to his name at Aquis Park enough to sit equal second with Luke Dittman while both trail leader Daniel Griffin (32).

Plumb has 49 wins to his name this season so far across all tracks.

Among his most fancied chances are Magic Millions 2YO Classic runner Betaima who will run in the QTIS Two-Years-Old Handicap (900m).

The hoop also rates Wine Barrel ($3.50), San Pierre ($9) and Takotsubo ($3.80).

“I rode Betaima at work on Thursday and it’s coming off Magic Millions and Listed races back to a two-yearold. It should be in a different league,” Plumb said.

“Win Barrel is a really good chance and my sister’s (Angela Plumb) San Pierre, if he is fit enough for the 1800m he will win.

“It’s just a big step up going from 1350m to 1800m.”
