Currumbin board team has reputation on line

- ELIZA REILLY

FROM the surf life saving club that brought you Steak Club, this is board banter.

It all started when the Summer of Surf social media page posted an image of the Currumbin board relay team taking out the 2019 Aussies title, previewing the upcoming board relay duel that was set to be one of the defining contests of the summer.

What was meant to build anticipation instead instigated an all-out war as board relay teams from around the country claimed they were the “best” in the business.

“They (Alexandra Headland, Manly and Newport) started running their mouths around,” said Currumbin A board relay team member Corey Fletcher.

“It’s all a bit of a laugh. “Alexandra Headland put $100 on the line that no one would beat them and then they came eighth at Round 2.

“We all talk smack on the line because I usually go third so I’m waiting and joking about how I’ve got to catch them.”

Fletcher, who has reportedly led Currumbin’s case online, has played a substantial role alongside Hayden White and Joe Engel in Currumbin A’s board side taking the lead in the series just ahead of Currumbin B in second and Newport in third.

Fletcher also leads the individual board series by four points with Currumbin athletes and teams also in the frame to take out the women’s surf race, male surf race, ironman and ski relay series.

“It makes training so fun and enjoyable because we all get along and can have a laugh before switching on for training,” Fletcher said.

Summer of Surf started yesterday afternoon, followed by finals today.
