-

GOLD Coast’s powerhouse teams Burleigh and Labrador will take on Queensland’s best women’s hockey sides at the annual TigerTurf Cup in Brisbane this weekend.

Fourteen teams from the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Toowoomba and Sunshine Coast will contest the annual twoday pre-season, nine-a-side tournament, to be held at the Clem Jones Sports Complex in Carina, Brisbane.

The competition will feature the 2019 premiership-winning sides from Gold Coast (Burleigh), Brisbane (KedronWavell) and Sunshine Coast (Nambour), as well as some current Brisbane Blaze players and former Australian Hockeyroos stars.

The tournament has historically proven a valuable learning curve for sides competing, providing knowledge of what to expect in the hockey season ahead.

More than a dozen talents who played for reigning Hockey One national league champions Brisbane Blaze, including Australian under-21 representatives, will compete at the TigerTurf Cup.

Burleigh open their tournament against Brisbane team Valley this afternoon, followed by games against Easts 2 and the mighty Kedron-Wavell squad, the winners of three of the past four TigerTurf Cup titles.

Labrador will take on Brisbane opponents Easts 2, Valley and Ascot in their three Pool C matches.

University of Queensland are the reigning women’s TigerTurf Cup champions.

The men’s TigerTurf Cup, also featuring Labrador and Burleigh, will run next Saturday and Sunday.
