Manage your side gig without it intruding on your day job

MORE than two million Aussies are juggling multiple jobs but it is not always an easy feat.

Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show 1.13 million women and 975,000 men had at least two concurrent jobs in the 2016-17 financial year, with most holding their second job in administration and support (299,400 people), healthcare and social assistance (240,500), accommodation and food services (238,600) and education and training (232,500).

Michael Rosenbaum says the sharing economy is a great option as workers can choose how much time they dedicate to their side gig.

“Australia’s sharing economy is booming, making it easier for Aussies to earn extra cash from a side hustle, without actually having to commit much time into it,” he says.

“In fact, 90 per cent of those earning through the sharing economy are spending less than 10 hours a month on the platform.”

Time Stylers chief executive and founder Kate Christie says her best advice for anyone taking on a second job or starting a side business is to work off one calendar, master the to-do list and avoid multi-tasking.

“Even if you have got two jobs, a family and a social life, you want everything to operate out of one calendar so nothing falls through the cracks and you always know what your time commitment is,” she says.

If possible, Christie says it is also helpful to schedule the jobs so they each have set days and times.

“That way, there is not a lot of time and energy taken up managing your roster,” she says.

Christie says good time management is also important.

“Make sure you’re scheduling time into your calendar for yourself – put in your jogs or date nights or if you are going to get a massage,” Christie says.

“Then, like any important commitment in your calendar, make sure you turn up.”
