NZ steals ‘raft-up’ record
GOLD Coast-based luxury boatbuilder Riviera’s New Zealand owners have stirred a fresh round of friendly rivalry across the “ditch” after a record-breaking gathering at Awaawaroa Bay on the southern side of Waiheke Island.
The event was organised by Riviera’s New Zealand dealers to celebrate the boatbuilder’s 40th anniversary this year. It was the first of a series of events planned across the world to celebrate, including the Gold Coast later this year.
New Zealand’s Riviera family kicked off celebrations last weekend with a record-breaking “raft-up” (pictured). That’s when Riviera owners tie their boats together for a few days of fun in the sun aboard their floating hotels.
The New Zealanders managed a raft-up of 106 Riviera boats ranging in size from 33ft to 72ft. That beat the record of 48 boats set in
Perth in 2017. The luxury yachts formed a giant circle spanning 234 metres overlooking a centre stage where revellers were treated to performances by some of New Zealand’s top musical artists, including female vocal ensemble The Lady Killers.
Riviera owner Rodney Longhurst described the opening 40th anniversary event as a “bucket-list” moment for him, personally.
“We are proud to begin our 40th-anniversary year celebrations with the largest New Zealand and Riviera raft-up ever to be held,” he said.
“Riviera is a trusted brand in New Zealand and is the luxury motor yacht of choice. In a country of such experienced boaters, I am proud that the New Zealanders respect and value Riviera’s craftsmanship.”
There’s no word on whether Aussie Riviera owners plan to better the New Zealand effort.
