Flirting with new run ideas

- TOM BOSWELL

OFFICIALS are already looking at ways to expand a new Gold Coast running series that will launch this weekend.

Flirt With Dirt will begin tomorrow with Round 1 at Pizzey Park, Miami, in what will kickstart a three-round series aimed at providing another avenue for junior runners and experienced athletes to test their skills in a competitive format.

Round 2 will be held at the Hinterland Regional Park, Mudgeeraba, on March 22 while the third and final event will be at Emerald Lakes Golf Course, Carrara, on May 23.

Racing is open to runners of all ages, with 1500m, 2km, 3km, 4km, 6km, 8km and 12km events on offer.

“We want to provide racing opportunities for students and athletes who love cross country, outside of the normal school and club setting,” Flirt With Dirt founder Stephen Jackson said.

“It’s a first step for those who want to get a taste for offroad running.

“They are raced over shorter distances, nothing too technical, nothing too steep.

“It’s a chance for trail runners to work on their speed. Our courses are shorter and sharper, conditions are largely good underfoot and you’re still among friends and running off-road.

“Flirt with Dirt celebrates running in nature – so one of our goals is to minimise our impact as an event.

“There’ll be little touches and attempts to minimise waste, recycle, re-use and be a responsible running event.”

Jackson said he hoped the event would grow.

“We’d love to add a couple more venues and perhaps offroad duathlons,” he said.

“We believe the Gold Coast is one of the most magical places in the country to be active and among nature, and deserves more opportunities.”
