The luck of the draw goes against United

- ELIZA REILLY

GOLD Coast United coach Alex Bundalo has labelled his side’s 2-2 draw against Eastern Suburbs a missed opportunity as they try to replace NPLW star Dee Thompson.

Thompson twisted her ankle during a challenge last weekend and while she escaped serious damage, the attacking winger is expected to miss the next few weeks.

United got out to a 2-0 start in Round 1 against the Eastern Suburbs before injury struck and they were limited to 10 players, allowing their opposition to level the contest.

“I was reasonably disappointed, not in our effort or the result, because we did play well,” Bundalo said.

“The momentum of the game changed (when Easts scored) and I think it was a case of two points dropped.

“We could’ve gotten a bit more out of it.”

Bundalo said he was still in the process of deciding who would come into the side in place of Thompson though reaffirmed United had the depth to cover her brief absence.

“She’s a special player, so she’s hard to replace, but it’s an opportunity for our young girls,” he said.

Despite very nearly getting their season off to the perfect start, Bundalo said United had spent the week refining their game plan ahead of Round 2.

“We’ve been working on our midfield and trying to get our control game better,” he said.

Tomorrow United take on Moreton Bay United who lost their Round 1 clash 14-0 to the Logan Lightning.

Bundalo said his side still couldn’t afford to take Moreton Bay lightly despite their sputtering start to the season.

“The dynamic of a game can change very quickly so we’ve mentally got to turn up to every game,” he said.

Tomorrow’s game kicks off at 3pm at Wolter Park, Albany Creek, in Brisbane.
