Selfless MBA not to blame for demise of Tedder Ave

- ROBYN AYDON, MAIN BEACH

I HOPE Tina Barber’s letter

(GCB, 12/3) triggers major discussion and development of a new strategic plan by all stakeholders for Tedder Ave.

Having lived in Main Beach for 30 years, I share her dismay at its current state of empty shopfronts and “eerie emptiness” and her fond memories when every shop was leased and Tedder was “alive” with locals and tourists.

The explanation for its demise is not a simple one but can be attributed to greed from landlords and neglect and lack of leadership from civic leaders over the past eight years who have failed to recognise the potential and delights of this beautiful business precinct.

It’s similar to the story of Chevron Island – neglect and poor civic leadership. These are potentially vibrant destinations overlooked while battles over new casinos and cruise ship terminals dominate.

I would, however, like to correct the perception Ms Barber has of the role played by the MBA in the Tedder Ave demise.

I have been an observer and admirer of the energy, selflessness and generosity displayed by the key people in the Main Beach Association (MBA) – all volunteers – since its inception four years ago.

They are not anti-development. Their total commitment has always been to attract and retain a whole new generation to Tedder by preserving the unique and authentic characteristics of this business precinct.

Unfortunately, quotes about ferry docks were taken out of context and do not reflect the work being done behind the scenes to assist traders, landlords and residents to rejuvenate this amazing hub but there are no quick fixes or simple solutions and require a major rethink by government and council re all transport issues.

In the interim there are opportunities to encourage visitors and the MBA’s Spring Flower Festival held last September has been a successful trailblazer organised by an army of volunteers. About 7000 visitors flocked to Tedder over that September weekend.

The real solution to this problem involves a determined effort by local authorities, landlords and business owners to provide a properly funded action plan.
