Rugby back on track
THE Gold Coast District Rugby Union has crafted an all-new, full-length season draw for 2020 after initial fears the competition would be forced to shorten.
The Queensland Government’s surprise relaxing of full-contact training restrictions and the slashing of crowd attendance restrictions has saved the original 16-week season format.
All eight Gold Coast first grade clubs will return to contest a 14-week regular season to earn qualification for two weeks of finals.
Draw architect Kristy Smith said the GCDRU were pleased to have reached a joint decision with clubs to tackle a full season after lengthy COVID-19 delays.
“There has been a lot of logistics and compliance that have gone into the preparation of this season relaunch,” Ms Smith said.
“Under the guidance of the Queensland State Government and especially Queensland Rugby Union general manager Gaven Head we are now ready to see that hard work come to life on the field.
“Making this year’s competition viable has not been easy under the circumstances.
“I cannot thank the clubs and their volunteers enough for the support and patience shown during this time.”
The good news arrives too late for some clubs in the lower grades.
Hinterland Celtics and Beaudesert Warriors have been forced to withdraw from the third grade competition while Gold Coast Eagles have also ruled out competing in the competition.
The Colts Under-20s grade is another COVID casualty with the GCDRU exploring options to revive the newly minted James O’Connor Cup in 2021.
Senior and junior rugby start dates will align on July 25, giving clubs just two weeks to prepare their facilities for a return to play.
More than 100 junior teams have nominated to play.
Champion Helensvale opens its season with a grand final rematch blockbuster against Griffith University Colleges Knights on enemy turf on July 25.
