CITY’S BEST HAIR DRESSER CROWNED

HAIR hustler Charvel Edwards says inner beauty is great but a beautiful balayage is life-changing.

The 27-year-old’s colouring skills have caught the attention of Gold Coasters and she has been crowned the city’s best hairdresser in the Bulletin’s Best of the Gold Coast series for 2020. Ms Edwards, who works out of her Coomera garage, said amid tears that claiming first prize was “unexpected and the biggest achievement of my life”.

“I grew up in a small country town in New Zealand and it was farfetched to achieve anything this great,” the colourist said. “The other 19 finalists are amazing and a lot of them are quite wellestablished. This proves that with hard work you can do anything. Three years ago I took a leap of faith and opened my own business with no clientele, no business degree, no experience with managing a salon and no money.

“Now, in 2020, by the grace of God I am booked out two to four weeks in advance, even during COVID-19.

“I love making people feel better, smile and walk out of the salon a foot taller.

“My clients are my extended family.

“And I love them.” Client Awhi Gray nominated Ms Edwards because she “started her hairdressing career around 15 or 16 years of age and has worked so hard”.

Hair by Charvel beat strong competition from Hair by Kathy Richardson, who came a close second.

Other top hairdressers included Donna McLaren, Hair Headquarters; Tammy Blundsdon, Vibe Hair and Beauty; and Elise Milne, Elise Rae Hair Studio.
