Culture club is aim for Lomax

- ELIZA REILLY

ALL it took was one season for Jesse Lomax to realise his heart belonged with the North Gold Coast Seahawks.

Now 23, Lomax started playing for the Seahawks in 2007 before migrating south to the Gold Coast Rollers last year for a change of scenery.

Learning off the likes of former NBL players Rhys Martin, Thalo Green and Anthony Petrie and qualifying for a QBL grand final was a once-in-alifetime experience but the lure of the Seahawks proved too strong and Lomax has linked up with his junior club again.

“My heart always remained at the Seahawks,” Lomax said.

“It was like a college experience, learning from different players and the likes of Rhys Martin, Thalo Green and all the other guys.

“My game has changed a lot since then so I’m excited to get back to the Seahawks and bring back some of what I’ve learned. My personal goal this year is to develop the Seahawks’ culture.

“We’ve had a few guys come in and out but I’d love to develop that culture and compete for finals.”

Despite Basketball Queensland delaying the start date of the Queensland State League season until August, Lomax believes his side is as ready as it was in May to take to the court.

Small groups of Seahawks continued to train on outdoor courts while their season was delayed and their hard work is already beginning to bear fruit if training is anything to go by.

“Our shooting has been in form so that’s a testament to us continuing to train even though we didn’t have an indoor court,” Lomax said.

“We pride ourselves on our defence and whoever is on the court giving 100 per cent.”

And despite the Seahawks failing to replicate their SBL championship success since graduating to the State League in 2018, Lomax believes a teal tide is steadily building.

“I’d say the club as a whole is still on the pathway of trying to grow and emerge as an upand-comer,” he said.

The Seahawks start their QSL season against the Northside Wizards in Brisbane on Saturday night.
