Knights bolster attacking armoury

- ELIZA REILLY

GOLD Coast Knights coach Grae Piddick admits his side is still to recapture the form that saw them storm out to a 4-0 start in the 2020 National Premier League.

But a trio of esteemed recruits could ensure they’re back in contention sooner rather than later.

Like most clubs, the Knights lost players due to the season stand down but have just as quickly replaced them with two former A-League talents.

Queenslander and former Newcastle Jets A-League player Harrison Sawyer is on loan from South Melbourne for the rest of the season after the COVID-19 situation worsened in Victoria.

“We needed to add an attacking player and he suits our style of play,” Piddick said.

Former A-League forward and Costa Rican international Jean Carlos Solorzano will also add another string to Piddick’s bow in the front half.

“He’s an exciting player when fully fit and we expect him to score goals because he’s been putting in the hard work at training,” Piddick said.

Lastly, former Mount Druitt Town, Bentleigh Greens and FC Dordrecht defender has Blake Thompson has joined the club.

“We were light in defence to begin with,” Piddick said.

“With all of the players, we have full faith we can keep building over the next month as we build our fitness capabilities and combinations in play.

“The shutdown has provided its challenges but we’ve shown good patches and patches we can improve on.”

The Knights continue their campaign away to Brisbane City FC on Saturday night.

News of the Knights’ new signings comes after Gold Coast United announced during the week Kingscliff product James Brown had agreed to return to the club for the remainder of the NPL competition.

Brown joined Gold Coast United on a three-year deal in December 2008, going on to make 36 A-League appearances with nine goals.
