Belief binds Suns in games

- MARCO MONTEVERDE

GOLD Coast coach Stuart Dew insists belief is growing in the Suns’ camp despite a third successive defeat.

The gallant Suns were beaten 12.6 (78) to 11.8 (74) by St Kilda at Metricon Stadium on Thursday night in a seesawing affair.

The defeat continued the Suns’ poor recent run but Dew was full of praise for his side.

“We talked about trying to build belief – they’re not trying to build it anymore, they’re getting belief,” Dew said.

“Don’t get me wrong, there’s hurt players in the locker room but, on the flip side, we are right in the games.

“In terms of what it does for the group, it’s exciting and will bind us together even more, going through these experiences, and hold us in good stead down the track.”

Dew was thrilled with the performance of rover Touk Miller, who kicked two goals and had 18 disposals.

“We’re a big fan of how he goes about it. He’s having a fantastic year and one of the most consistent mids in my view,” Dew said.

“He’s worked on his kicking to make sure he’s a really good two-way player.

“He’s starting to link up and understand how he can help our offence. He’s great to have at the club and is stamping his authority on games.”

Dew was also delighted with Matt Rowell’s decision to extend his Suns contract until the end of 2023.

“It’s fantastic news for the whole footy club,” Dew said of the re-signing of the young gun, who is out for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.

“He’s made of the right stuff, Matt. I said to him at half-time, I wouldn’t mind putting the No.18 jersey on for the last quarter.

“He’s so dedicated to his craft and we can’t wait to get him back.”

Gold Coast now sits in 11th on the ladder with four wins and six losses.

It will play Essendon next on Wednesday at Metricon Stadium.
