COSTCO COMING TO CITY
COSTCO has filed an application to build a warehouse and petrol station at Coomera Town Centre.
The retail giant lodged plans with the Gold Coast City Council yesterday for a 13,620sq m site.
It wants to start work in early 2021 and will employ 330 people. Costco has outlets in north Brisbane and Ipswich.
WAREHOUSE retailer Costco has unveiled plans to build its first Gold Coast store at one of the city’s biggest shopping meccas.
Costco filed a development application with Gold Coast City Council on Friday to build a warehouse on a 13,620sq m site at Westfield’s Coomera Town Centre.
The retail giant, which already has one outlet in north Brisbane and another in Ipswich, has entered an agreement with Scentre Group and Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC) to start construction of a warehouse and petrol station complex in early 2021.
Costco managing director Patrick Noone said the rapidly growing northern Gold Coast was the “perfect location” for a new store.
“We are delighted to secure this site in the Gold Coast and continue our growth in the state,” he said.
“This will be our third Costco warehouse in Queensland, and fourteenth in Australia.
“We have had our eye on this region for some time and in that period we have seen the exciting and dynamic growth that has taken place.
“We think we have found the perfect location within Coomera Town Centre and we now look forward to obtaining our approvals and then commencing construction and getting open to the community as soon as possible thereafter.”
The project is expected to create 330 full-time and part-time positions through both the construction period and once it opens.
It will come with a 750bay carpark.
Scentre Group development director Stewart White said securing Costco was a coup for Coomera and would shore up the city’s north as a major retail hub.
“The arrival of a soughtafter international retail brand such as Costco recognises the long-term growth and potential of the region and builds on our vision for the Westfield Coomera Town Centre as an unrivalled destination in retail, dining, lifestyle and entertainment for the thriving northern Gold Coast population,” he said.
“Costco is the next step in our ongoing development of the Westfield Coomera Town Centre and with planned future development on adjoining land, we’re looking forward to bringing a new level of convenience, services and experiences to our Gold Cost customers.”
The first stage of Coomera Town Centre opened in 2018. Westfield has previously unveiled plans for stage two, which would see the shopping centre dramatically expanded, but have not indicated when the project would move forward.
