Kisukano builds bank in a hurry

- MARK OBERHARDT

TRAINER trainer Michael Nolan marvels at the fact his filly Kisukano can pass $1 million in earnings on Saturday after just over a year’s racing.

Kisukano is aiming to join The Odyssey as the winner of both the 2YO and 3YO The Jewel races at the Gold Coast.

Last year Kisukano caused one of the biggest upsets in recent Queensland racing history when she beat the $1.20 chance Rothfire in the 2YO The Jewel.

The 3YO race this year is a far more open affair but things are starting to line up once again for the filly.

Kisukano has won six of her 11 starts and has $707,000 in earnings. A win on Saturday will lift her into the millionaire’s club with an extra $300,000 in the bank.

“You have to remember Kisukano didn’t have her first start until February last year,” Nolan said. “I can only marvel at the fact she could win a million dollars in just over a year.”

NORTH Burleigh surf lifesavers have shown their dominance in the water, with multiple podium finishes on the first day of the Queensland Youth State Championships at North Kirra.

North Burleigh male and female under-12 competitors were unstoppable throughout the day, taking first place in the surf teams, Cameron relay and board relay.

Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park female under-11s claimed gold in the surf teams, Cameron relay and board relay.

About 1600 athletes ranging from under-11 to under- 15 hit the surf and sand to battle it out for state glory.

SLSQ surf sports manager Stuart Hogben said it was great to see the Nippers’ skills in action across the first day.

“We had favourable surf conditions for racing throughout the morning, which saw plenty of close finishes in the finals,” he said.

“While Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast clubs have dominated the placings in most events, it was great to see Gladstone’s Tannum Sands on the podium for the under-15 and under-14 male surf team.”

The championship action continues on Saturday and Sunday at North Kirra.
