+ MICK’S CELEB PAD ON MARKET
AUSSIE motorcycling champion Mick Doohan has put his Coomera estate and mansion, which he rents to Hollywood celebrities, on the market.
Known as Diamond Head, the 18ha estate has panoramic views, huge river frontage and a lavish mega mansion at its heart.
The estate that Mr Doohan purchased for $1.7m in 1996 could, according to the selling agents, generate a record sale for a residential property on the Gold Coast. The current record stands at $27m
Michael Willems of Ray White, who is marketing Diamond Head with colleague Jackson Rameau, said the sale offered a rare opportunity to acquire a prime piece of real estate in arguably one of the best locations in the world and suited both residential or commercial investors.
“You would be hardpressed to find an estate within 200km of the Gold Coast that is of that size in such a central location and with such a level of privacy,” Mr Willem said.
“It would be the ultimate private hideaway for a residential buyer, but on the other side of the coin if you look at the growth that is going on in the Coomera area, it could also be an incredible development opportunity.”
The sprawling estate has been in and out of the international spotlight over the years.
In 2015 it became the centre of a legal battle between actor Johnny Depp and his then wife Amber Heard. It was alleged that an enraged Mr Depp trashed the mansion after getting into an argument with Ms Heard causing a damage bill of more than $200,000.
The couple were renting the estate while Mr Depp was in Australia filming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Pink have also been past guests of the mega mansion.
Last year Mr Doohan decided to open the mansion’s doors to A-listers seeking a place to quarantine during COVID-19 in a bid to revive the Gold Coast’s film industry amid the pandemic.
He has owned Diamond Head since 1996, when he bought the allotment for $1.75m off the Gold Coastbased dredging company.
The estate mansion was built by Mr Doohan’s brother, Scott, a former motorcycle racer turned builder who heads the award-winning Gold Coast-based Doohans Developments.
Among its highlights are eight bathrooms with heated marble floors, a 2000-bottle wine cellar, cinema, gymnasium, pool rooms, a trophy room, four offices, a six-car garage, private jetty, a landing strip for a light aircraft and a space to land and house a helicopter.
There is also an air-conditioned boathouse, guesthouse and caretaker’s residence.
Mr Doohan, who won five consecutive 500cc motorcycle world championships in the 90s, is now a multi-millionaire businessman with global interests.
Mr Doohan’s overseas interests and businesses means he is spending more time out of the country and is thought to be the reason behind the sale of the estate.
RP Data shows Mr Doohan still owns a property in Jefferson Lane, Palm Beach’s millionaires’ row, which he bought for $1.4m in 2000.
Despite the marketing campaign only just beginning, Mr Willem said that there had already been interest in the property and inspections carried out, but he would not disclose by whom. He said expressions of interest were invited on the property and would close in mid-May.
