Jackson among the gold medal action
NORTHCLIFFE’S Jackson Symonds has won three gold medals on the opening day of Surf Life Saving Queensland’s senior and masters state championships.
And in another impressive performance by a Gold Coaster, the 2018 Stawell Gift winner Elizabeth Forsyth from Currumbin took out the open female beach flags in spectacular fashion.
Some of the highlights from Tugun included Alexandra Headland’s Jett Kenny and James Porter winning the open male double ski.
Jett’s father Grant Kenny followed suit, winning the 55-59 open double ski with Alexandra Headland clubmate Jeffrey Lemarseny.
Georgia Miller helped her Northcliffe teammates win the open female rescue tube
race, her first time competing in the traditional event.
Surf Life Saving Queensland’s general manager of sport Simone Haugh said it had been a wonderful day of racing.
“Tugun has turned on the weather, after the Gold Coast has experienced a lot of rain over the past few weeks,” she said.
“The glory days were truly
back today, with some of the greats of our sport like Grant Kenny and Darren Mercer competing.
“We also saw a lot of our elite athletes including Georgia Miller and Lana Rogers compete in our traditional events including open female rescue tube rescue and the surf belt race.
“For the first time we hosted beach sprints under lights at Burleigh Heads, with locals enamoured by the action on the sand.
“Some of the best sprinters in the country, including Elizabeth Forsyth, took part, which was so pleasing for us to see. We can’t wait for another action-packed day tomorrow.”
Surf Life Saving Queensland’s live stream will begin at 7.45am on Saturday.
