LOVERS – NOT HOONS – RALLY FOR MENTAL HEALTH
QUEENSLAND motoring nut Peter Freeman says make no mistake — the 500 people he has coming to a classic car meet “are not hoons on any account”.
The Brisbane Car Meets and Cruising president – hosting a Toys ‘n’ Pride & Joys rally at the Advancetown Hotel on Saturday – says unlike recent out-of-control hoon meets, this one is for “real car enthusiasts”.
The only police attention he is expecting is officers attending as car fans too. “Police stop by to admire the cars and acknowledge that we are not hoons on any account and we are real car enthusiasts,” he said.
“We have some police come attend in their own personal cars and join in.
“We follow and abide by the council rules and regulations and they are happy with our events and have stopped by on occasions to check them out,” Mr Freeman said.
More than 500 people have already registered for the event, supporting Mental Health Queensland.
Mr Freeman said the club held two car meets every month on the Gold Coast and they never had problems.
He said he was worried about “car enthusiasts” all being tarnished.
“Hopefully they settle down so they don’t cause any problems for the Queensland car scene,” he said.
He added that the statistics in mental health have frightened him, and believes this event can create positive energy.
“I thought if mental health affects one in two people and heaps of men and women are into cars and motorbikes, it will help them get through it,” he said.
The rally starts at 5.30pm.
