Hackett’s Hedges sale

- LISA HUGHES

RETIRED Olympic swimming gold medallist Grant Hackett has put the villa he owns on Millionaire’s Row in Mermaid Beach on the market.

Records show Hackett, regarded as one of the best long-distance swimmers in history, bought the Hedges Ave property under the company name Hackett Group in May 2014 for $1.5m.

The villa has been used as a holiday home and landing pad by Hackett, who lives in Melbourne with his wife Sharlene Fletcher and son Edward, 13 months (pictured).

The villa at 1/100 Hedges, being marketed by Troy Dowker of Kollosche, is only mere metres from the sands of Mermaid and Nobby beaches and will go to auction on May 30 at 9am.

Soaring to four-levels, and covering a total 331sq m, the pièce de résistance of this beachside abode is the rooftop terrace with views stretching south to Coolangatta and inland to the hinterland.

It has three bedrooms, including a luxurious master suite with stone vanities and all-over tiling. There are two bathrooms and two powder rooms, along with open-plan living and dining spaces.

Floor-to-ceiling glass doors and windows maximise the beach views and capture the sunrises in all their glory.

With all four levels serviced by a lift, you can be sipping cocktails on the rooftop one minute and down on the beach the next.

Punctuated by designer fixtures and finishes throughout, the villa offers the opportunity for luxury, lowmaintenance living.

There is basement parking for two cars and an additional visitor’s car space.

Mr Dowker said he expected the property to generate wide interest, being located in one of the most sought-after locations in Australia.

He said Mr Hackett was selling the villa as it was now surplus to his needs and he was keen to start a new chapter in his life. beachside

Hackett’s Olympic career spanned from 2000 to 2008, during which time he won three gold, three silver, and one bronze medal in freestyle events.

During his career, he set a total of 15 world records, five long course and 10 short course and he still holds the world record in the 1500m short course event, which he set in 2001.

He retired from swimming in 2008.

After leaving the swimming arena, Hackett suffered from addiction and mental health issues before finally checking himself into a US rehabilitation centre in 2017.

Hackett married Fletcher late last year, which he posted on Instagram.

He is also father to twins, Charlize and Jagger, who he had with ex-wife, singer Candice Alley, who he married in 2007 and divorced in 2013.
