Bass bullish about Uni 7s title chances

- ANDREW BRYAN

THE Bull Sharks are in the box seat to take out the AON Women’s Uni 7s national title at Bond University this weekend after an unbeaten run in the first round of the finals.

“It’s going to be really exciting and there is a good vibe to being at home,” said Bond University captain Emily Bass.

“The last round we went undefeated … it helped us know what we can do, and our ability.

“The team changes a little without the Aussie players involved. It’ll be an equal playing field for all teams and we can’t get complacent.

“Teams are out to get us because we’re leading the table but we want to make our university proud.”

There is set to be a raucous home crowd at the Fabian Fay Clubhouse; the finals coincide with Homecoming Week when Bond alumni traditionally return to campus to catch up with old friends and attend sports matches.

Bass, 22, said a good performance in the final could produce a boom in women’s rugby on the Gold Coast.

Bass has a Bachelor of Sport Management from Bond University and now works for the Queensland Reds spruiking the sport to young students.

“The university has invested a lot into our women’s program and it would mean a lot for us to get a result like that,” Bass said.

“I was the first woman who came through the 7s program and helped build it to where it is. For me, I’m really proud to wear the jersey and it means so much to play here.”

The Bull Sharks want a fast start when they clash with second-placed Sydney University in the opening game.

A good performance in that game is vital to building momentum and pressing their claim for the national title.
