WILL TO SUCCEED

STUDENT’S DASH FOR MATE

- KYLE WISNIEWSKI

WHEN eight-year-old Will Pocock takes on the 2km Junior Dash at the Gold Coast Marathon in two weeks, thoughts of a mate doing it tough will carry him across the finish line.

The Hillcrest Christian College student is running to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation following his close friend Ayden Russell being diagnosed with the disease in late May.

“This will be the furthest I’ve ran for a race,” Will said. “I did 1km for cross country at school and came sixth.”

Will is already a winner in this race, having so far raised more than $2500 for the Leukaemia Foundation.

The charity uses the money to help families like the Russells – who have had to relocate closer to Brisbane Children’s Hospital where Ayden is receiving treatment.

“It’s good the money helps find them a place and helps with research,” Will said.

Ayden’s mum Beverley said the donations had been “overwhelming”. “We’ve got a bit of a journey ahead of us and it has been a hectic couple of weeks since Ayden was diagnosed,” she said.

“It’s been incredible the support people have shown us through messages and Will’s fundraiser. We can’t thank everyone enough.”

The Gold Coast Marathon weekend is July 3-4.
