ABSOLUTE BEACHFRONT SHACK

- VIVA HYDE

THE humble beach shack has edged closer to extinction with the listing for sale of two original cottages along Palm Beach’s exclusive oceanfront.

Sitting on the sand among multi-level trophy homes, the two Jefferson Lane properties are separately owned and marketed to buyers willing to meet their notso-humble price tags.

The ramshackle two-bedroom shack on a 429sq m block at No.259 is listed for $4.975m with Troy Dowker, of Kollosche.

No.99 is configured as two twobedroom flats on a 575sq m lot and has been tightly held by the same family for 83 years. The latter is listed by Scott Wagner Beachfront Brokers. Expressions of interest close June 28.

“I have been surprised by the rejuvenation of the expat interest because that did drop off through the pandemic, but now there seems to have been an increase in expat curiosity … and people moving their retirement plans forward five, and sometimes even 10 years,” Mr Wagner said.

He said the property had been bequeathed by the first owners to their children, now aged in their 80s, and still lived in the flats.

No.259 was built in the 1950s and remains in original condition, with a beachfront deck and large grass yard. Records show it was last bought in 2001 for $1.2m by a local investor who retains several beachfront properties nearby.

Mr Dowker said a number of offers just shy of the asking price had already been received, with inquiries mostly from Sydney and Melbourne as well as from overseas and Queensland buyers.

The site has 10m beach frontage and is unsuitable for multi-dwelling development.
