Coasters scoop up state training awards
THE Migrant Centre, Sea World Cruises and Frizelle Sunshine Automotive have been named as southeast Queensland regional winners in the 60th annual Queensland Training Awards.
Based in Southport, the Southport-based Migrant Centre was the regional winner of the Community Training Initiative of the Year category for two Skilling Queenslanders for Work projects, Migrants Matter and WorkAble. Last year, the centre reported a 77 per cent employment rate for participants in the two programs.
Winner of the Harry Hauenschild Apprentice of the Year category was Sam Raper. He took on a mature-age apprenticeship
and was recently employed as a plumbing teacher at TAFE Queensland’s Ashmore campus. He also works at Marshall Plumbing Solutions.
The VET Teacher or Trainer of the Year category winner was Matt Foster, who draws on his experience as a rugby league player and trainer as well as his fitness qualifications, to teach fitness, sport and first aid at TAFE Queensland’s Ashmore campus and local schools.
Sea World Cruises was named as the region’s Medium Employer of the Year for helping to develop the next generation of tourism business operators, skippers and marine crew. This year, 55 per cent of its workforce, or 31 staff, were undertaking training.
Regional winners will vie for a spot in the state finals. The winners will be announced in September.
