DOUGHBOY RISES IN CASE OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY

- JEREMY PIERCE

IT’S not exactly what you’d call a stamp of approval.

As speculation continues that Mt Warning’s iconic summit trail could become “our next Uluru” and be closed to climbers, the northern NSW tourist magnet has been dealt another blow, this time from Australia Post.

The postal service has included Mt Warning, also known as Wollumbin in the local indigenous language, in a series of stamps commemorating Australia’s volcanic past.

There’s just one problem. The photo for the Wollumbin Mt Warning stamp focuses on another mountain 20km to the south, Mt Doughboy.

Wollumbin is barely visible in the picture’s top right corner and is covered with writing showing the cost as $1.10.

Tweed Shire Mayor Chris Cherry described the blunder as “unfortunate” but said it was great that the “beautiful caldera and internationally-significant environment” was getting national exposure. “Mt Doughboy does not quite have the same recognition but maybe it will now,” he said.
