Sydney’s new $2m race Gollan’s target

- BEN DORRIES

QUEENSLANDER Tony Gollan has declared Sydney’s new $2m invitation race for fillies and mares has suddenly become “primary spring target No.1” for his Group 1 winner Krone.

Gollan is having a family holiday in Port Douglas in far north Queensland but news travels fast and he was delighted with the announcement of Sydney’s new race called The Invitation to be run over 1400m at Royal Randwick on October 23.

He thinks it is right in the “sweet spot” of Krone, his star mare who won the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill in March.

He is already kicking up for Krone’s credentials to get an invite to race in the new marquee contest for fillies and mares.

“This race is the sweet spot for her, she is a Group 1 winner and has come back in great shape,” Gollan said. “We had a heap of potential options for her in the spring, but this race now becomes the primary spring target for her if she can get an invite.

“She fits the profile for it and 1400(m) is absolutely perfect for her. There are some big races in Melbourne to consider but they are at a mile and I am a touch dubious about her at a mile.

“This new Sydney race becomes primary spring target No.1 for her.”

Gollan also has a new stable acquisition, Kiwi Group 1winning filly Bonham, that he is hoping could mount a case to be included in Sydney’s new $2m race for the girls.

Bonham, soon to turn four, won the Group 1 Levin Classic (1600m) at Trentham in January when trained in New Zealand by Johno Benner and Hollie Wynyard.
