Suns to play on to the beat of their own drum

- TOM BOSWELL

THE Suns will be playing to the beat of their own drum on Saturday when they face the Western Bulldogs.

Suns member Jaerae Simmonds, who is part of the Sunscreamers supporters group who sit behind the goals of each home game, will introduce a drum to Metricon Stadium, with the instrument to become a regular fixture.

Simmonds has been inspired to bring in the drum after seeing the success Victorian member Jordan Gunning had with one in the club’s last two games, against Richmond at Marvel Stadium and GWS in Ballarat.

Such was the noise of the drum, the players and coach Stuart Dew have spoken about it’s positive influence on the group. “I’ve always wanted to get something going down there (at Metricon),” Simmonds said.

“When the young man from Melbourne came up with the drum it was a hit so I thought to get one up here permanantly. We will have it at every game.

“We will hit it after each goal, before the game, before the bounce, even if the opposition score we will give it whirl. We will try and make it a dudgeon up here for other teams.”

Simmonds said anyone was welcome to join the Sunscreamers behind the goal to help lift the team to some more wins in the back end of the season.

“There is a good vibe when people chant, it’s the best seats in the house,” he said.
