Upgrade of flood-prone crossing set to begin
WORK on a $10m causeway over Howard Creek on Tamborine-Oxenford Rd at Wongawallan will start next month.
Queensland Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the project was funded 80:20 by the federal and state governments respectively.
Relocation of services and clearing of vegetation started in April.
“In major rain events, locals will be familiar with the sight of the Howard Creek crossing going underwater and forcing them to find alternative routes because access to Tamborine Mountain has been cut off,” Mr Bailey said. “Residents have wanted some peace of mind by seeing a higher bridge built over the creek and that’s what this project will deliver.
“The new causeway will be about one metre higher and eight metres wider.”
Federal Member for Forde
Bert van Manen said money would also be spent replacing pipe culverts, installing new turning lanes and improving lighting.
“The Lanes Rd and Colin Meagher Rd intersection will also be upgraded with dedicated turning lanes and better lighting,” he said.
