Three generations of Turei clan take the field to chase down slice of club history

- NIC DARVENIZA

THREE generations of Nerang Bulls’ first family will take the field together for the first time as the club fights to close out an undefeated season in second grade.

Former club captain Rob Turei, who skippered Nerang to the Gold Coast first grade premiership in 1992, will come out of retirement at 60 years old to make history at his beloved club after 15 years on the sidelines.

He will run out in second grade alongside his son Cameron, 40, and grandson Kyle, 20, to form a once-of-a-lifetime combination in the inside backs as the club chases its first undefeated season this millennium.

The youngest Turei will call the shots from flyhalf with his grandfather and father shoulder-to-shoulder in the centres.

“I am pretty excited,” Rob said. “I’ve played with my son before, and with my two brothers, but to play with my grandson will be a big thing.

“Hopefully it will become a family tradition and Kyle will get to play with his grandson too, but he’d better get a move on – I don’t think he even has a girlfriend at the moment so he might be 70 before he has to pull on the boots again.”

Cameron Turei said he would treasure this day forever.

“I’ve never done an undefeated season in 22 years at Nerang, so to do it with the young fella and the old man for the last game is something I’ll cherish,” he said. “Maybe even hanging up the boots after the finals because win or lose this day will be the pinnacle.”

Rob Turei has been training at his local F45 gym for months to prepare for his return to Glennon Park against Bond Pirates at 2pm.
