PREMIER STEPS UP WARNING ON NSW DANGER

- LUKE MORTIMER AND KAITLYN SMITH

QUEENSLAND recorded eight new cases of Covid-19 on Friday – including seven locally acquired Delta cases linked to the Indooroopilly cluster detected in home quarantine.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk revealed there was one overseas case, also picked up in hotel quarantine.

While an encouraging result, Ms Palaszczuk reinforced her warning to Gold Coasters and Queenslanders more generally to steer clear of the NSW border amid that state’s worsening Covid crisis.

She raised “serious concern” the NSW outbreak might soon creep across the border: “The last thing we want to see is this virus spread north, the virus spread south and spread across the nation. It’s absolutely imperative that NSW contains this virus.”

The new numbers come after police confirmed they had charged the son of the man who allegedly travelled from Covid-ravaged Sydney to Byron Bay, sparking the lockdown of the shire and three more local government areas.

It’s alleged Kristian Radovanovic, 19, travelled with father Zoran Radovanovic, 52, to the region.

Tweed Byron Police investigated reports the pair had travelled to the holiday destination and surrounds in late July.

In Queensland, there were 158 active Covid-19 cases and 35,503 tests were conducted in the 24 hours to 6am on Friday.

The state recorded 11 new cases on Thursday, including 10 linked to the school Delta cluster and detected in home quarantine. One new case was acquired overseas.

There were 155 active cases and a total 130 linked to the cluster.

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said more than 23 per cent of Queenslanders had received their second dose of Covid-19 vaccines.

There had been more than 16,000 vaccinations and 31,700 tests in the previous 24 hours.

Queensland has recorded 1948 coronavirus cases since the pandemic began. Seven people have died, 1753 people have recovered and more than 3.79 million tests have been undertaken.
