Stolen car’s wild M1 moves

- KEITH WOODS

SHOCKING video has emerged showing youths driving a stolen Range Rover at high speed on the M1 on the Gold Coast.

The car, which was taken from an address on Fifth Ave in Palm Beach on October 6, is seen almost striking other vehicles as it races towards Brisbane.

The car was located at the Hyperdome Shopping Centre in Logan five days later.

It had been badly damaged by the thieves and was strewn with graffiti, including slogans about Capone and FTP (f*** the police).

Owner Jade Kidd said the car was “completely ruined”.

“There’s $40,000 worth of damage. That’s not including the engine, they’re going to check the engine.”

Further videos show youths posing and making hand gestures from within Ms Kidd’s vehicle.

Videos posted by the youths also appear to show them pictured on the balcony of the Hilton Hotel in Surfers Paradise and present at a mass brawl at Coomera train station.

The young people in the videos make no attempt to conceal their identities. For legal reasons, the Bulletin has had to blur their faces in photos and videos published.

Ms Kidd’s car was one of 15 vehicles stolen in the Palm Beach area in a two-week period. Vehicles have also been stolen from a number of other suburbs across the Gold Coast.

Among the cases reported by the Bulletin were:

A van belonging to a family business in Varsity Lakes was stolen from an address in Palm Beach and found crashed in Southport a number of hours later. Two boys, aged 13 and 14, were arrested and charged by police.

A Ford Mustang was stolen from an address in Helensvale and found badly damaged in Guanaba two days later. A 15-year-old girl and 16-yearold boy were arrested and charged by police.

Police told the Bulletin that no arrests have yet been made in relation to the theft of Ms Kidd’s vehicle, which was stolen just two days after she moved into a Palm Beach home, having relocated from South Australia three weeks earlier.

Ms Kidd said she had been left distressed by the incident, and was looking to install security screens and an alarm at her home.

Local MP Michael Hart previously told the Bulletin action needed to be taken to tackle youth crime on the Gold Coast.

“Cars are being stolen every second or third night,” he said.

“Unfortunately the youth justice system is not fit for purpose ... There are no consequences for these kids breaking into a place and stealing cars.”
