GC hospo staff on a knife’s edge

- SAM STOLZ

STAFF shortages exacerbated by close contact Covid cases are leaving small Gold Coast businesses – in one operator’s words – on a “knife’s edge”.

Despite Prime Minister Scott Morrison redefining close contacts of Covid cases as household members only, Shelly Greaves – owner of Burleigh’s Jimmy Wah’s – said things remained on a “knife’s edge” as it “changed day to day”.

A stack of venues, including Etsu, Paloma Wine Bar, Mr Hizolas and Balter Brewing had temporarily closed at what is the busiest time was revealed this week.

Ms Greaves (right) said the close contact redefinition offered hope but: “The reality is young hospitality staff all live party together.

“We’ve been incredibly fortunate with staffing but what people don’t realise is the impacts are even felt with the loss of one team member,” Ms Greaves said.

“We had one staff member test positive to Covid earlier in December. They covered four double shifts for 40 hours per week. It’s very difficult to replace.

“A number of staff could no longer work as they chose not to get vaccinated. It is hard. We’re doing the best we can.”

Burleigh eatery Hail Mary i was scrambling due to climbing Covid cases, saying they were “almost at breaking point’.

In a social media post, Hail Mary owners said: “Like many businesses, we are also grappling with the (Covid) outbreak in the area and have so few non-isolating staff left.”

They apologised to the public for having to limit and cancel bookings, refuse entry to the unvaccinated and cut hours.

“We’re doing our best to provide a positive dining experience while following all rules
