Back-to-back for Nutri-grain Series leaders

- TOM BOSWELL

ALI Day and Harriet Brown remain undefeated in the Gold Coast legs of the Nutri-grain Ironman Series after securing wins in Round 4.

Day’s victory in the Super Sprint format at Kurrawa Beach on Friday was his 10th straight race victory while Brown also leads the current series after securing her third win from four rounds.

The Super Sprint round included three 10-minute races, with athletes getting a staggered start in the final event based on their ranking.

“Three seconds handicap is nothing, when you’ve got someone like Bevy (Matt Bevilacqua) breathing down your neck,” Day said.

“He’s the best board paddler in our field, he’s the best board paddler in our sport and has been for a really long time. Particularly in conditions like this, he chases runners like no one else.

“I just knew that if anything I had to get off to a really good start, and be at the pointy end for that first race because when you’re in this pursuit format you want to be in the box seat.

“I couldn’t have put myself in a better position, I went off first and did all the little things right. It was good, I’m happy, and it obviously helps when you’re winning,” he said.

Brown led from start to finish in the final race.

“I had a lot of fun today, it’s super windy but I like it like that because it means I just have to really focus on my own race, because if I don’t a wave can come out of nowhere,” Brown said.

“When I went out on the board, I could see all the skis coming in and I did not want to be anywhere near them.

“So I ran down a little bit further to try and dodge them, and that seemed to work really well.”

Georgia Miller finished second in her first round of the 2021-22 series.
