RECORDS MELT IN THE SCORCHING HEAT

- SARAH PERILLO

VICTORIANS have sweltered through some seriously sticky weather, with this year’s summer smashing decadesold records.

Melbourne notched 17 days above 30C last month – the highest tally since 1974, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

And Melburnians endured a month of humid nights, with the city recording the highest average minimum temperature, 18.3C, since 1855. Statewide, the average minimum temperature was 3.65C above the long-term average – the highest on record for January.

It was also the eighth-wettest January on record – 91 per cent above the monthly average. Near the end of the month, thunderstorms brought strong winds, heavy rainfall and flash flooding across the state.

Victorians can expect to cop more wild weather this month as the country is in the midst of a La Nina weather event.
