Bugs a future staple of pets
COCKROACHES, fly larvae and sustainably raised crickets are set to replace traditional tins of fish or meat for our cats and dogs.
Traditional pet diets are making way for insect protein, as more becomes known about its benefits. Insect-based pet food treats have only recently become available in Australia, with meal or dry food expected to follow by the end of the year, in line with the US and UK.
“We are seeing interest in insect-based treats grow (with owners) looking for organic and more sustainable food options,” Pet Circle head vet Dr Teagan Lever said.
